Open core

Open at the core. Commercial at the edges.

Kodela is built in the open. The community core is free and Apache-2.0 licensed; commercial editions add collaboration, governance, and deployment — without paywalling the fundamentals.

The model

One product, layered by need

Each layer builds on the one beneath it. You can stay on the open core forever, or adopt commercial editions as your team and governance needs grow.

Community

Open source · Apache-2.0

For a single developer working in a single repository, entirely on your machine — no account, no cloud, nothing leaves your laptop. The open-source core: context engine, MCP server, silent watcher, local memory graph (co-change + real import edges + function → decision), contradiction check and automatic risk scoring on every capture, and offline reranked semantic search (no API key). Plus a full CLI that runs entirely offline — recall the relevant why at task start (kodela recall), keep memory healthy (kodela hygiene), and understand any codebase with structure fused with the why: a comprehension map (kodela comprehend), dependency-ordered onboarding tours (kodela tour, localized), change blast-radius (kodela impact), and an auto-derived layer/domain architecture map (kodela architecture). Also the VS Code extension and a free local web app (kodela ui) — whose Understand tab renders the comprehension map, guided tours and architecture visually, not just in the terminal. Everything a single developer needs, running locally. Team memory, the shared dashboard, and governance begin at the Team edition.

Principles

How we think about open

The core is genuinely open

The community edition is Apache-2.0 and does real work — not a crippled demo designed to push an upsell.

Develop in the open

A public repository, a public roadmap, and a contribution guide. The boundary between open and commercial is documented, not hidden.

Commercial funds the core

Team, Cloud, and Enterprise revenue sustains the open core's development — a model aligned with the community, not against it.

Free forever — nobody can resell it

The community core is Apache-2.0, so it stays free for every individual developer. The commercial editions carry a separate LicenseRef-Kodela-Commercial license and a CI boundary check keeps them out of the open-source package — no one can repackage the free core and sell it back to you.

Community

Built with the people who use it

Kodela exists for engineers shipping with AI. The roadmap, the issues, and the design discussions happen in public.
